MASTER CLASS: Quality of Online Courses: Design and Administration
The growth of online education, brought educators’ attention into the practice of those professionals involved in online course development including administrators/managers who oversee and manage the production and instructional designers who are the key professionals involved in online course development. In this workshop, we will discuss quality online course offerings from design and management perspectives. Online course development is a complex endeavor, and it is not reasonable to believe that just one or two people can create a high quality online course. We will discuss how a quality production requires a highly organized, concerted effort from many team members.

It's official.......

I provided a 7 minute video clip to an Associate Professor at Cape Breton University for her ID course's opening class. It was about "How I Became and Instructional Designer". In it I was able to relate how completely random events and serendipity led to my current profession and how the same is probably true for most people in this line of work.

Cognitive scientists have been systemically studying processes such as attention, memory and learning for more than 150 years. This rich resource of knowledge has been only recently applied to developing evidence-based interventions in education. The speakers in this Symposium will explore how cognitive principles can inform instructional design and critical issues in education to bridge the gap between the lab and classroom.

For my Alma Mater (Business Degree), the year 2013 marks the
University of Windsor's 50th anniversary as a public institution, but the story of the university actually began with its founding in September of 1857, when the first students arrived to study at its predecessor, Assumption College. In the more than 150 years that have since past, the small, liberal arts college has grown into today's non-denominational, comprehensive, teaching and learning university. More than 16,000 students attend the University of Windsor today and its alumni family is over 100,000 strong. |
Fellow East Bay Alum becomes Chancellor of CSU System
Tim White '72 recently toured the East Bay campus of CSU, soon after becoming the Chancellor of the entire California State University. During his Hayward talk with reporters, including student journalists with The Pioneer newspaper and Pioneer Web TV, White offered this advice to today’s CSUEB students: “Never lose track of where you’ve been. Always do the best in the circumstances you’re in, because that will open the next door. I did that and was successful. “Give beyond self. It’s not just about Tim White, so now I’m reaching back and opening doors for the next students coming". |

SASKATOON Sept 28-October 03
We are visiting the city of Saskatonians In 1882, the Toronto-based Temperance Colonization Society was granted 21 sections of land straddling the South Saskatchewan River, between what is now Warman and Dundurn. The aim of the group was to escape the liquor trade in that city and set up a "dry" community in the Prairie region. The following year settlers, led by John Neilson Lake, arrived on the site of what is now Saskatoon and established the first permanent settlement. The settlers travelled by railway from Ontario to Moose Jaw and then completed the final leg via horse-drawn cart as the railway had yet to be completed to Saskatoon. |

My wife and I visited the Emerald Isle in mid July, visiting the usual tourist sites and experiencing some of the best weather we could have hoped for given the usual climate of rain and overcast skies at this time of year. Unfortunately, our good fortune in terms of climate was bad for the natives. They experienced about 3 weeks of no rain conditions-which apparently constitutes a drought, and high (for them) temperatures in the 23-30 C range. Our Australian and Southern US tour members could only shake their heads at what seemed to them to be 'pleasant' conditions.
I will be Chairing the following 4 sessions at this 2 day conference:
